Recently, I’ve been working on driving AI transformation within our org. To get a more structured understanding of AI—and give myself a little push—I decided to take Amazon’s official AWS AI Practitioner exam.
I just passed the exam last Friday, and wanted to share my fresh experience here for anyone curious.
Exam Fee
The cost is around €100, and you can choose to take it either online or in person. I chose the online proctored option.
Preparation (Total ~15 hours)
1. Understand the exam scope (30 min)
The content is broader than a Foundation-level cert, somewhat closer to Associate level. Based on the official guide:
- 20%: AI and ML basics (training, optimization, evaluation, etc.)
- 24%: Generative AI fundamentals
- 28%: Application of foundational models (e.g. SageMaker, Bedrock)
- 28%: Responsible AI (concepts) and AI safety/governance
2. Study time (~12h)
I used:
- AWS Skill Builder – structured and detailed, but the narration feels robotic
- Steph’s Udemy course – more engaging and better for exam-focused review
Overall, I preferred Steph’s course for its clarity and structure, although Skill Builder offers a more complete knowledge base if you have time.
3. Mock exams (30 min)
I practiced using mock questions from Skill Builder. They helped me identify weaker areas and get used to the exam format.
4. Review the official exam guide (2h)
AWS offers a detailed PDF guide. It’s verbose, but I went through and took notes. If you’re tight on time, skimming for key points is enough.
5. Prepare your test environment
If you’re taking it online, the exam is hosted by Pearson VUE. They’ll email setup instructions before test day.
Test Day
1. Check-in 30 minutes early
You’ll need to scan your surroundings and upload your ID using your phone. The whole session is webcam-monitored. No pen or paper allowed.
2. Exam format
- 65 questions total: 15 unscored test questions + 50 scored questions
- You get 100 minutes, but I finished in about 40.
Results
You’ll receive your score within 5 days (mine came within 6 hours). You’ll get both a certificate and badge via email.
I scored 936, likely missed just two questions 😊
Final Thoughts
I’d definitely recommend this certification for anyone curious about AI or working on AI-related products. It’s well-structured, not too intimidating, and gives you a solid grounding in both GenAI and responsible AI principles.
Feel free to reach out if you’re prepping—happy to share resources or tips. More content on AI and product coming soon!
